We Are Still Here: eight intertwined stories from the present, past and future tell a story of resilience and how despite two hundred and fifty years of colonialism, the indigenous people of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific are ‘still here’. The feature film was made in response to the anniversary of James Cook’s landing in Australia in 1772. The genre-spanning short stories were made by 10 Indigenous Australian, Maori and Pacific Islander artists, united by the theme of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous cultures.

Boy: the most successful film in New Zealand history
It’s New Zealand in 1984 and Michael Jackson’s song Thriller has moved the world, even here. An 11-year-old boy is growing up with his brother and other abandoned cousins under the care of their grandmother. He’s a dreamer who admires Michael Jackson and his other hero is his father Alamein, who is the subject of the boy’s fantasies. He imagines him as a deep-sea diver, a war hero or a relative of Michael Jackson. But when his father returns home after seven years, his son is forced to come to terms with the man he fantasised about, find his own potential and learn to live without the hero he had such high hopes for.
Short film: A story of first love. Two boys and a girl meet in the car park of a country pub while waiting for their parents. What at first seems like a relationship based on rivalry soon develops into a close friendship proving that love can be found in the most unlikely of places.

Muriel’s Wedding: Muriel lives with her family in a remote Australian town whose only attractions are shopping malls and a marine park. She lives in a dream world of ABBA songs and bridal catalogues while dreaming of a fairy tale prince to rescue her from the company of her tyrannical father and superficial friends. When her prince still hasn’t arrived, she decides to look for him herself and sets off alone for the bright lights of the big city. This cult Australian comedy features songs by ABBA and Toni Collette along with Rachel Griffiths in their first big roles.
Short film: How to Become a Detective. A smug detective initiates his inexperienced sidekick into the secrets of the trade. However, on his first investigation in the field, he is confronted with the reasons why he became a private eye: an enigmatic girl and her mysterious disappearance. A short film about wonderful encounters, love and twisted memories.
